In a move that has sent shockwaves through the AI community, the Trump administration has officially dropped all regulatory restrictions on Anthropic's powerful Mythos and Fable models. The decision, announced late Tuesday, effectively greenlights the unrestricted deployment of these advanced language models without the guardrails previously imposed by the Biden-era AI Executive Order.
The original restrictions, put in place in late 2025, required Anthropic to implement strict safety testing and use limitations, particularly around bioweapons and misinformation. Now, those requirements are gone. Anthropic has welcomed the decision, stating it will “unlock the full potential of our models for scientific research and economic growth.” But not everyone is celebrating.
Former OpenAI policy director Sarah Myers called the move “a catastrophic failure of leadership.” In a statement, she warned that “unregulated deployment of frontier models is like handing out nuclear reactor controls without training. We are not ready for this.”
The timing is also notable: it comes just weeks after reports that China’s AI labs are accelerating their own model releases. The administration frames this as a competitiveness issue: either America leads, or it falls behind. But the real question is—at what cost?
